Zaleplon is a prescription sedative-hypnotic medication used for the short-term treatment of insomnia, particularly sleep-onset insomnia. It belongs to the non-benzodiazepine “Z-drug” class, designed to promote rapid sleep initiation with minimal next-day sedation.
Zaleplon works by selectively binding to the GABA-A receptor (α1 subunit), enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Its ultra-short half-life of approximately 1 hour allows fast onset of action while reducing residual morning drowsiness, making it suitable for patients who have trouble falling asleep but not staying asleep.
Because of its pharmacokinetic profile, zaleplon is not recommended for sleep maintenance insomnia. The medication should be taken immediately before bedtime or when the patient can remain in bed for at least 4 hours.
Safety and Warnings
